Advanced Chemistry (AP Optional)

Advanced Chemistry introduces students to the concepts and methods of general chemistry. There will be a focus on the structure and properties of matter, chemical reactions and rates of reactions, thermodynamics and equilibrium. A brief overview of organic and biological molecules will close out this survey. There will be a moderate number of labs.
Major course emphases include:
- An introduction to the periodic table
- Chemical Reactions
- Chemical Bonding
- Kinetics and Equilibrium
- Entropy and Free Energy
The AP Option ($890 tuition) will add a Friday class session each week and will have an extensive emphasis on both content and lab work. At least 12 experiments will be conducted, along with additional inquiry-guided labs.In addition to the topics in Advanced Chemistry there will be an emphasis on:
- Using models, representations and mathematics to communicate scientific phenomena and to solve problems
- Engaging in planning and implementing data collection
- Performing data analysis and evaluation of evidence
- Connecting ideas across multiple disciplines
Upon completing advanced chemistry with AP practice, students will be prepared for the AP Chemistry exam.

Prerequisite: Completion of Saxon Algebra 2 (or its equivalent) with an A or B.
