Class Description: This course will be a brief overview of some of the causes, major moments, and major figures of the American War for Independence. We will begin with some of the causes of the break between England and the colonies, cover the up-and-down moments of the early Boston and New York campaigns, then Trenton, Saratoga, Valley Forge, Monmouth, Camden, Cowpens, and conclude, of course, with Yorktown. Famous (and infamous) characters such as Washington, Howe, Franklin, Adams, Lafayette, Cornwallis, and others will put in noteworthy appearances.
The Glorious Cause by Jeff Shaara
Teacher's Note: If you can find a copy, I highly recommend the American Heritage Junior Library series volume Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill by Francis Russell as a guide to the early days of the war. Unfortunately, it is long out of print, so it is not required.
