In Classical Greek I the students will be introduced to the ancient Greek language using the Greek to GCSE: Part 1 textbook. Specifically, the course will concentrate on the so-called Attic dialect (Attica being the region in which Athens was located), the normative dialect forspeakers and writers of ancient Greek from the fifth century BC to the fall of Constantinople in AD 1453 (and beyond). The students will begin to gain a mastery of the first stage of the Greek
language through a combination of translation into English, translation into Greek, written composition, listening practice, and reading. Students will be guided through important grammar and will learn vocabulary throughout the year, equipping them to begin reading Greek texts such as Plato, Sophocles, and Demosthenes, as well as texts written in other dialects as well such as
Homer, Herodotus, and the New Testament.
