Class Description: Ever wondered how Gandalf persuaded the dwarves to meet in
unsuspecting Bilbo’s home? Or what kind of creature Gandalf even is? Or what other epic tales the long ages of Middle-Earth might have to tell? In this course, we will dive deeper into the mysteries of Middle-Earth by reading and discussing selections from Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth by J. R. R. Tolkien, edited by his son, Christopher Tolkien. This work contains stories that will satisfy the hunger for more that Tolkien’s main works (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) always leave readers with. Add some Tolkien-magic to your summer with this light course. To get the most out of the course, students should have read either The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings beforehand.
Required Text: Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth by J. R. R. Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien (ISBN-10: 0544337999)
