Class Description: In this course, you will explore the historical and theological significance of influential Latin mottos from the Protestant Reformation—no prior knowledge of Latin required. Although the well-known five solas are distinctive, there are many other significant mottos worth exploring. We will look at the meaning and impact of around thirty of these phrases, seeing how they became part of important confessions of faith and continue to resonate today. The course will also introduce the visual symbols associated with these expressions, such as printer’s marks, coins minted by the city of Geneva, woodcuts by Lucas Cranach, and more. These images carried important messages that helped spread the ideas of the Reformation.
Each session includes:
● A close look at short Latin phrases and their meanings
● Discussions on their theological significance
● Examination of visual emblems related to the Reformation
● Exploration of broader Reformation themes
Students will gain:
● A grasp of Latin’s role in the Reformation
● Familiarity with key theological concepts expressed in Latin
● Insight into the impact of these Latin mottos
Required Materials: Materials provided by the instructor (PDFs and online resources)
