Class Description:  In Psalm 19, King David writes, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.” Just how does the heavenly realm point us toward the Creator? By diving into some of his fiction and non-fiction works, C.S. Lewis will guide us through his answer to this question. Students will investigate the Medieval understanding of the universe, a cosmology that shaped Lewis’ works, and they will consider how that view might impact the Christian’s understanding of the universe today.

Course Objectives:  At the end of this course, the student will be able to...

  1. Explain the Medieval understanding of the universe

  2. Articulate Lewis’ explanation of the connection between the heavenly realms and our own through his writings

  3. Write a persuasive paper considering theological implications from and/or literary methods supportive of Lewis’ position

  4. Deliver a presentation on an aspect of Lewis’ cosmology

  5. Chart a map of the heavenly realms, related to one of Lewis’ works of fiction


Credits: 1 (Elective), Non-honors

Pre-requisites: This course is for high school students only.
