Music History & Aesthetics (elective for high school)

Music History & Aesthetics (elective for high school)

Regular price $725.00

Class Description:  This course is designed for 9th-12th grade students who want to develop a deeper understanding of artistic quality with a focus on Western music. This course will center on musical genres – orchestral, choral, chamber, operatic, and solo literature – with an emphasis on composer style, timeless quality, and Christian aesthetics. The goal of this course is to equip students to listen critically to both old and new music, to understand and knowledgeably discuss what qualities in music are reflective of God’s character, and therefore recognize what music is worthy of our admiration regardless of our personal taste.

Credits: 1 (Elective); Non-honors

Prerequisite: intended grades 9 through 12

Mtg. Days:  Tuesdays & Thursdays (2 days each week)

Required Materials: (subject to change before the summer)

    • What to Listen for in Music, by Aaron Copland
    • Specific pieces of music for listening – can be purchased according to family preference: mp3 download, streaming service, CD, vinyl (even 8-tracks would do!). Please respect the work of these artists and purchase their work rather than copying it from another source.
